New Guidelines for Membership

Welcome to the Fort Worth Chapter of Soka Gakkai USA. The SGI-USA (Soka Gakkai International USA) is an American Buddhist organization whose mission is to contribute to peace, culture and education based on the philosophy and ideals of the Buddhism of Nichiren Daishonin.

Members of the Soka Gakkai practice the Buddhism of Nichiren Daishonin for their personal enlightenment and for the development of a humane and peaceful society. The Soka Gakkai was founded in Japan in 1930 and has developed into an international organization, Soka Gakkai International (SGI), with members in more than 177 countries. Soka is a Japanese word meaning "value creation"; Gakkai means "society".

In 1991, SGI separated from the Nichiren Shoshu priesthood, and is dedicated to the creation of a humanistic and non-authoritarian organization based on equality and respect for all life. Members practice the Buddhism of Nichiren as lay believers. SGI-USA provides legally-sanctioned wedding and memorial services for those members who choose Buddhist ceremonies.
